Unfailing love seems elusive. It seems to have gone out of fad. I turn on the TV or log onto the internet and read about a parent that has done something unspeakable to their child. Failed love in a relationship that is supposed to be sacred – secure. I have watched Satan attack and destroy marriages that seemed rock solid with words, lies, and betrayal. Failed love in a relationship that is supposed to be sacred – secure. Unfailing love seems elusive.
Unfailing love SEEMS elusive…but it can be found.
In the poetry books of the Old Testament, the term “unfailing love” ( the ESV calls it “steadfast love”) can be found 169 times in seventy-nine verses. Over and over again throughout those books we continually get bombarded by this idea of unfailing love.
This idea of unfailing love literally means that even when we cannot or won’t hold on anymore, God still does. How amazing is that? Look at a few examples…
You gave me life and showed me your unfailing love. My life was preserved by your care. Job 10:12Return, O Lord, and rescue me. Save me because of your unfailing love. Psalm 6:4For your unfailing love is higher than the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Psalm 108:4For he loves us with unfailing love; the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the Lord! Psalm 117:2Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you. Psalm 143:8
The amazing thing about God’s unfailing love for us is that it just isn’t a truth written in a book. It is alive and working in and around us all the time. These men that wrote these passages wrote them from their experiences. They just didn’t believe them because God said them, they believed them because God showed them. He showed up. He actually was unfailing. They knew their unfaithfulness and doubt, and yet God still held on to them. They experienced God’s unfailing love. It still happens today. When my world crashed down around me, God showed me His unfailing love through the grace and love of His people who picked me up and shared with me their stories of God’s unfailing love. His unfailing love – grip felt a lot like hugs from loving people. His unfailing love – grip looked a lot like people on their knees praying for me. His unfailing love – grip sounded a lot like a voice reminding me that I find who I am not in earthly failed love but in His unfailing love-grip.
His love for us is amazing, and not of this world. We can never forget that. We don’t have a clue what love is until we truly give ourselves into the unfailing love – grip of God.
